William Ball named interim research VP at University of Cincinnati

Dr. William Ball has been appointed interim vice president for research for the University of Cincinnati.

He starts the position on Aug. 1. Ball replaces Sandra Degen, who announced in May that she is stepping down from the position July 1 to return to the faculty.

UC?s research enterprise last year received more than $443 million in funding, placing the university at No. 25 in the country among public universities for federal research expenditures.

Weekly jobless claims fall to 428,000

The number of Americans filing new applications for unemployment benefits for the week ended June 25 fell to 428,000, a decline of 1,000 from the previous week?s revised figure of 429,000, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday.

The four-week moving average was 426,750, an increase of 500 from the previous week, according to a news release.

The largest increases in initial claims for the week ended June 18 were in California (up 4,393), New Jersey (3,274), Florida (3,146), Michigan (1,794) and Pennsylvania...
