Boehner, Obama were close to deal, now moving to more modest plan

House Speaker John Boehner is working to change the government?s spending habits, but as he twice approached a $4 trillion deficit-reduction deal with President Barack Obama, the 61-year-old West Chester Township Republican was reeled back in by his caucus? conservative wing, Hamilton Journal-News reported.

The Tea Party-fueled group forced Boehner to abandon a ?grand bargain? with Obama and made him move Wednesday to secure the votes for a more modest deficit-ceiling plan.

Obama and Boehner were close to a compromise that would have cut spending by about $3 trillion over 10 years.
